In the build-up to race-day, we’ll be putting the spotlight on each of the twelve famous city landmarks that runners will pass on the Run Norwich race-route.
Norfolk residents and City fans won’t need any introducing to the eighth landmark on our race-route – it’s the home of Norwich City Football Club, Carrow Road.
Runners will loop around the famous football stadium, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, around the 4km mark.
Carrow Road regulars may be used to picking up a pie and tea on a match-day, but for runners on the race it will be a quick drop of H20 – the stadium is the first water station on the route!
Built in just 82 days, during the summer of 1935, the ground was the new home of the club following their move from ‘The Nest’.
The ground’s first match resulted in a 4-3 victory for the Canaries against West Ham United.
The stadium initially consisted of one covered seating stand and open terraces on earth banking on the other three sides. The ground could hold about 38,000 spectators.
Few changes were made to the stadium until in the 1960s several smaller improvements were made that mainly consisted of increased cover.
Carrow Road recorded its highest attendance in 1963 when 43,984 fans visited an FA Cup match between Norwich and Leicester City.
The early 1990s saw Carrow Road convert into an all-seater, with the construction of the Barclay Stand. A decade later, the new Jarrold Stand took the capacity of the ground to 27,224 for which it remains to this day.
We wish Norwich City Football Club the best of luck for the upcoming season!
