In the build-up to race-day, we’ll be putting the spotlight on each of the twelve famous city landmarks that runners will pass on the Run Norwich race-route.
St James Mill is an English Industrial Revolution mill and is one of Norwich’s most prestigious monuments.
On the day, participants will be able to appreciate the picturesque River Wensum and scenic riverside paths, which lie adjacent to the Grade 1 listed building.
The site was first occupied by The White Friars in the 13th Century. The mill was built between 1836-39, shortly after The Norwich Yarn Company was established, to prevent the decline of the local textile trade.
Due to the further downturn in the state of the industry, the Yarn Company was forced to let space in the Mill to other companies that required power to run their equipment such as piano manufacturers.
Inside, the mill is open plan with three individual meeting rooms and high ceilings; the floor is rectangular in shape
Jarrolds & Sons Ltd bought the mill in the late 19th Century. Subsequently, it was sold to the government as a training factory for war veterans.
In 1933, Jarrolds bought back the mill. An original arch and undercroft survive now and today the mill operates as a private office complex with The John Jarrold Printing Museum located behind.
This mill is part of the Norwich 12.
