Claire's Story

Last year, Claire Wallace sought out a new challenge, looking to get involved in running, after getting encouraged by a group of her friends. Initially, Claire signed up to a Couch to 5k programme, but struggled to maintain consistent attendance, leading to minimal progress and a slight loss in confidence.

Looking for a new take on her running journey, Claire was encouraged to ‘go big’ and signed up for her first big race, the Run Norwich 10k. Although excited by the prospect of taking part in a large-scale running event, Claire also found the prospect daunting, as the reality of the task set in, and she realised she had little-to-no knowledge on how to prepare both physically and mentally for the challenge ahead.

Before Claire could really begin to assess and evaluate what her next steps were, she received an email from Run Norwich advertising the Race Ready programme, a twelve week training course that aims to leave runners feeling as confident as possible heading into their first big race or event.

Without hesitation, Claire signed herself up. Not a seasoned runner, she was initially doubtful of any potential progress, after previously experiencing difficulties with both  her breathing and with her Multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease that effects the bodies nervous system. However, after sharing her worries with group coach Tim, Claire was shown a whole host of different breathing activities and exercises that could make her running easier and more enjoyable.

As her training on the Race Ready programme progressed, Claire also noticed positive changes to her finishing times at her local Parkrun, knocking two minutes off of her previous personal best.

On Sunday 8th September 2024, Claire completed Run Norwich 2024 – her first ever 10k race. Over the moon with her progression through the Race Ready programme, she was quick to tell us just how the training sessions had helped her:

“Finishing Run Norwich truly was an incredible feeling. Through Race Ready, my stamina and endurance have both improved drastically. I now know how to train effectively—not just push myself until I burn out—and I feel so much more confident. The best part? I actually enjoy running now!”

Claire was also keen to thank the fantastic Race Ready coaches, Tim Warner and Paul Evans, whose positive influence made her time on the programme so enjoyable:

“I owe so much of this progress to Paul and Tim, who supported me and gradually helped me believe in myself. The atmosphere in the course was incredible—everyone was so encouraging, and I’ve made some great new friends along the way. It was a true team effort.”

With Run Norwich 2025 not too far away, why not sign up for our Race Ready programme and get ready to take to the streets of NR1 this September?
